National Preparedness Month - Cybersecurity
9/17/2021 (Permalink)
September is National Preparedness Month: Is your personal information protected? Is your business safe from cyber attacks?
At SERVPRO of Eau Claire, our primary focus is on residential and commercial restoration and safety. For National Preparedness Month, we are taking extra steps to protect our small business from a different kind of disaster - cyber attacks.
According to Security Magazine, there is a cyber attack every 39 seconds - more than 2,000 per day. Cyber attacks can leave you or your business in financial ruin, delete vital information from your databases and servers, or even put people in physical danger with the information retrieved.
We are NOT cyber security experts, but we rely on those who are to help keep our business and team safe from cyber threats. We recommend the following steps as a starting point to protect against cyber attacks:
1) Limit the amount of personal information you put online
2) Update to the latest versions of software and operating systems
3) Make sure your passwords are strong, change them often, and use two-factor authentication whenever possible
4) Use anti-virus software, firewalls and ad-blocking services
5) Do not visit websites that do not have valid security certificates - check your browser settings to ensure you have the best security protection options selected
6) Never open an attachment or click links in emails that are not from a trusted source
For more information on how you can prepare for potential cyber attacks or other disasters and emergencies, go to ready.gov and get started protecting your home or business today.
Are You Prepared for an Emergency? SERVPRO Ready App Can Help!
9/12/2021 (Permalink)
Prepare your home and business today by downloading the SERVPRO Ready app
No matter where you live or work, emergencies caused by weather, fire, wind, water, and other natural or manmade disasters can strike at any time and are largely unpredictable. The property restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Eau Claire, an industry-leading provider of fire and water cleanup and restoration services, reminds home and business owners that preparing in advance is the best thing you can do to help minimize a disaster’s impact on your loved ones and your property.
Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month – a time to create, or update, your plan for when disaster strikes.
“In the same way that people make ‘resolutions’ at the New Year, National Preparedness Month is a great time to resolve to create a plan, or review your existing plan, each and every year,” said Rick Isaacson, CEO of SERVPRO Industries, LLC. “Everyone needs a comprehensive emergency plan. Business owners also need to plan for business interruption and continuation. But equally importantly, families and businesses alike need immediate access to data like emergency and insurance contacts, shut-off valves, electrical panel locations, and the line of command to authorize work so emergency responders can react quickly and appropriately during the emergency. This month’s focus on preparedness is a great incentive for both families and businesses to put a plan in place and review it regularly.”
Creating an emergency plan is straightforward, according to Isaacson. No matter what type of threats exist where you live or work – wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, or other natural or manmade disasters – tools are available from FEMA with guidelines for preparing emergency food, water, and medical supplies; planning for special needs; and creating communication and evacuation plans. These tools and others, like the SERVPRO READY app, also help you store essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Both home and business owners can download the free app at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp.
Business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating their local SERVPRO franchise as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider. SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app.
National Preparedness Month - Make a Plan

Prepare your home or business for an emergency. For more information, go to ready.gov or contact SERVPRO of Eau Claire at (715) 834-3473
In recognition of National Preparedness Month (NPM), SERVPRO of Eau Claire to would like to encourage Americans to work together to take concrete actions toward emergency preparedness. A disaster like a flood, fire or blizzard can be such a stressful situation to homeowners and business owners. When our SERVPRO professionals service people who have taken steps to prepare for such a catastrophe, their chances for staying safe and recovering quickly certainly increase.
Residents can begin to prepare for a natural or man-made disaster by taking the following steps to lessen the impact on their families and their communities if disaster strikes.
Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit – You should plan for 3 days of supplies, so you'll need water – a gallon per person per day – and non-perishable foods. Then add basic tools (wrench, pliers, can opener, matches), fire extinguisher, flashlight and radio with extra batteries, a first aid kit, extra clothing and hygiene items, garbage bags and duct tape, copies of important documents (insurance policies, ID, bank accounts), cash and local maps. Establish a Family Emergency Plan – Designate an out-of-town contact as your family's centralized, emergency communications facilitator in case your family is not together when a disaster strikes. Add that person's number to your emergency contacts on each family member’s cell phone. If you can't reach that individual with a call from a cell phone, try texting. Stay Informed – Learn about your community's emergency procedures and participate in activities planned during National Preparedness Month. You can also request checklists and other disaster preparedness tools from SERVPRO or at ready.gov. While it's common for individuals to insure their homes, cars and possessions, and even to prepare living wills to protect their families in the event of some unthinkable accident, but most people don't believe it will ever happen to them. Being prepared for an emergency requires a team effort. First, families need to make a plan, and each family member needs to know what to do. Then, communities and businesses need to have contingency plans in place to ensure their residents and workers stay informed. By working together, individuals, families, businesses and communities can make a real difference in minimizing the impact that a disaster has on their lives and their livelihoods. If disaster does strike, leaving fire, water or mold damage in its wake, SERVPRO of Eau Claire's emergency restoration specialists offer an assortment of services to help local residents quickly restore damaged property. Call us at (715) 834-3473 - we are always here to help!

September is National Preparedness Month - are you ready in the event of an emergency or disaster? We can help!
September is National Preparedness Month, an annual awareness event sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Disaster recovery specialist SERVPRO of Eau Claire says this is a great time for business owners to review their emergency preparedness and business continuity plans. SERVPRO points to startling statistics like this one to emphasize the importance of advance planning: according to FEMA, as many as 40 percent of businesses never reopen following a major flood disaster.
“Business owners who think they are prepared for an emergency because exits are clearly marked and fire or flood drills are parts of the regular routine really need to take another look at their preparations,” said Sue Steen, former SERVPRO Industries, Inc. chief executive officer. “A comprehensive emergency plan also contains critical information about the location of shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, emergency contact numbers and more—information that can save emergency responders precious time and help contain damage and minimize injury.”
Because SERVPRO knows the time to create a disaster readiness plan is before you need it, SERVPRO has developed the Emergency READY Program to help business owners create an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for their facility, at no charge. The business owner works with SERVPRO to gather and document information that will become critical if a disaster strikes. Once the ERP is created, business owners have access to their information 24/7 online and by using SERVPRO’s free smartphone app.
"When it comes to disaster readiness planning, it just makes sense to take advantage of the tools that are available, especially when they are offered at no charge," said Steen. "The first few minutes after a disaster strikes are often chaotic and very emotional. Minutes lost searching for shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, or emergency contact numbers can mean further property loss, and worse. With the information in a business’s ERP, our experienced technicians can move into action effectively and immediately to help minimize damage and set the business on the road to recovery."
SERVPRO of Eau Claire professionals specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it "Like it never even happened," for both commercial and residential customers.

Mitigation & Restoration: What's the Difference?
8/17/2021 (Permalink)
We are here to help, day or night, 24/7
During a storm, your building may suffer some damage. When this happens, it can be good to know the difference between mitigation and restoration before hiring a flood cleanup company.
Understanding what mitigation and restoration are and how the processes pertain to the cleanup and repair of your building is important. Here are some differences between the two:
- Mitigation comes first: If your building has been harmed during a storm, one of the first things you should do is make sure it will not sustain any further damage. During mitigation, a flood cleanup company can provide services, such as removing water and boarding up windows, to keep water from spreading and increasing the problems with your building.
- Mitigation is usually finished quickly: With mitigation, the company does not usually make any repairs to your building. The job here is simply to prevent any further harm. Because of this, the mitigation process is done as quickly as possible so that restoration can begin, as the restoration company can only start repairing your building after mitigation has finished.
- Restoration can be lengthy: Repairs are done during the restoration process, so it can often take much longer than mitigation. Depending on the extent of damage during the storm, the restoration process can take months to complete.
Mitigation vs. Restoration: Which Do You Need?
If your building has suffered damage during a storm, you may be wondering which of these services you need. The answer is that you will likely need both. Having mitigation done before you begin repairs can save a lot of work and trouble in the long run. If you begin repairs without mitigation first, you may end up needing to do more fixes than you would have otherwise.
Mitigation and restoration are services that go well together since they each offer something that the other does not. When you are searching for a flood cleanup company you should call SERVPRO of Eau Claire, we offer both mitigation and restoration services. When you call us, you can feel confident that your property will be properly dried and restored.

Is Your Roof Leaking? 6 Signs to Look For
8/9/2021 (Permalink)
A small roof leak can cause HUGE damage
Your Residential Roof May Leaking, Look For The Six Signs
Six Signs That Your Roof Is Leaking
As many plumbing experts know, leaking roofs can cause a plethora of unwanted problems such as water damage in your home. If these problems pop up, they can adversely affect your emotional and economic equilibrium. For this reason, it's good to be able to detect signs of a leaky roof early. In so doing, you can attain the professional assistance necessary to correct the problem and prevent structural damage to your property. With that idea in mind, consider whether you're experiencing any of the following six signs of a leaky roof:
1. A Loss of Granules
The granules of your roof's shingles can grow loose as a result of aging and ongoing exposure due to water damage. When your shingles start to lose their granules, the roof is subjected to faster deterioration.
2. Buckling Shingles
The shingles of your roof can start to buckle as a result of hot air coming from your attic. This hot air is an indication of poor ventilation and can lead to a build-up of moisture.
3. Mold And Mildew Growth
If you notice possible mold growing inside your home or on the roof, the growth could have been caused by a leaky roof. This is the case because a leaky roof will create the excess water and moist environment that mold likes to thrive in.
4. Roof Rot
Another sign of a leaky roof is roof rot. Roof rot is a term that refers to the process of your roof deteriorating rapidly. When this rapid deterioration transpires, your property can become increasingly susceptible to water damage because of potential leaks.
5. Damaged Skylights
Damaged skylights can cause your rainwater to leak into the home and cause water damage.
6. Damaged Flashing
When your flashing is improperly sealed or damaged against your roof, it can make it much simpler for excess water to start seeping into your home.
If you find that your property has been subjected to a leaky roof, you need to address and resolve the issue immediately. The best course of action is to contact a team of trained, IICRC-certified water damage remediation specialists. The team to trust is SERVPRO. All of our technicians will offer you the goal-oriented, detail-centered care necessary to restore your property with lightning speed

Home Air Quality
7/1/2021 (Permalink)
Does your indoor air need a checkup?
Does the air quality in your home seem a little "off?" Here are some things to consider from the American Lung Association about air quality in your home:
- Is anyone smoking indoors?
- Can you see or smell mold or mildew?
- Is the humidity regularly above 50 percent?
- Are there leaks or standing water anywhere—kitchen, basement, attic?
- Are all fuel-burning appliances (gas stoves, water heaters, fireplaces) fully vented to the outdoors?
- Is there an attached garage or basement where cars, lawnmowers or motorcycles are stored?
- Are household chemicals, paints or solvents stored indoors or in an attached garage or basement?
- Have you recently remodeled or added new furniture, carpeting or painted?
- Do you use odor-masking chemicals or "air-freshening" devices?
- Has kitchen or food garbage been covered and removed?
- Have you used pesticides recently?
If you have an ongoing air quality issue, call SERVPRO of Eau Claire for further consultation. We have a staff of professionals, certified in all aspects of deodorization and microbial remediation who are Here to Help.
Keeping Your Home Safe While on Vacation

Keep your home safe from leaks and other dangers while on vacation
SAFETY TIPS
There is nothing more frightening than the thought of going on a summer vacation, returning home, and finding that your home has been robbed, vandalized or damaged.
Whether it’s a flooded basement, or even a faulty water heater, there is nothing more devastating than the thought of this unexpected property damage.
There are some ways to help minimize the risk. Here are a few ideas to help keep your home safe while you're away this summer:
TIPS
Don’t make it obvious you are out of town or on vacation
- Try to arrange for a trusted neighbor to bring in your trash, mail and newspaper.
- Suspend your mail and newspaper until you return home.
Automatic timers
- Setting a couple of lights on automatic timers can help lend the impression that someone is home.
- Leave a car parked in the driveway.
Security System
- Consider setting up an in-home or exterior security system. Some cameras operate on WIFI and are easily mounted in or outside the home. These systems can send notifications to your phone when motion is detected and some even have a two-way speaker or alarm to deter a person trying to enter your space.
Leaks
- Help avoid major water damage by simply turning off your water before you leave.
- You may also drain your hot water heater to ensure no damage done from it.
- Turn off your central air unit prior to leaving to prevent leaks (or have it professionally inspected if you are unable to shut it down).
- Leave an extra key with a trusted neighbor—which will come in handy if, in the worst case scenario, there is a fire, flood, or some other issue that needs to be attended to before you return home.
Fire Prevention
- Unplug any unnecessary devices and appliances to help prevent electrical fires.
- Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors prior to leaving.
- If safe to do so, turn off the gas to your home (consult a professional for more information)
- Close your interior doors; the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute promotes closing doors to help prevent the spread of fire
Following these simple safety precautions could help you avoid a crisis or damage to your home.

Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Killer
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless and can kill in minutes - know the warning signs to keep your family safe
You can't see or smell carbon monoxide, but, at high levels, it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide, or CO, is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, and propane) burn incompletely.
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, with some groups— including unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems— being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide.
An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers, or idling cars left running in garages.
Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips, provided by the United States Fire Administration:
- Have fuel burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a trained professional every year.
- Open the damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace. Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home.
- Make sure all fuel-burning vented equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for exhaust clear and unblocked.
- If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not blocked with snow, ice, or other materials.
- Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris.
- Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Some grills can produce CO gas. Never use grills inside the home or the garage, even if the doors are open.
- Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home or business.

(5 star review)
by Joel L. - 3/22/2018
Early on Feb 27, 2018, a city sewer main backed up into our basement. We were one of over 50 affected homes, and got by "lucky" with only 7 inches of sewage in our finished basement. SERVPRO of EC was on site by 8 am and had the bulk of the cleanup done that day. Abbi & Sandy did a great job, and maintained a very professional manor throughout the day, eventhough they had more homes to get to after ours that day. Eve in the office kept us informed over the next week and the team completed the last few touch ups over the next week. I will not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Eau Claire in the future, they did a great job!. Thank you Abbi, Sandy & Eve.

Extreme Cold
1/16/2018 (Permalink)
According to the National Weather Service, $2.84 million dollars of property damage was caused by the extreme cold in 2015. Even scarier? Fifty-three people died and three were injured because of the extreme cold during 2015.
There are two things to be mindful of during the extreme cold, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical conditions to be aware of are, white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm, or waxy numbness. Hypothermia is when your body temperature drops to an abnormally low temperature, caused from long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone's body temp falls below 95 degrees (F), it's is important to seek immediate medical attention.
Seeing how this winter has been arctic blast of weather for weeks on end, it is vital you take some time and know the weather whenever you leave your home.
